At Epiphany Women’s Health , we perform a comprehensive exam which is designed to zero in on the health issues that are specific to the female patient. The exam can be performed by a doctor or nurse practitioner. During the complete exam, a patient will receive an exam of her overall body habitus, a thyroid exam, a breast exam, an abdominal exam, and a pelvic exam. A pelvic exam requires examination of the external genitalia, vagina and cervix (if not surgically removed).
A Pap smear may or may not be performed at this time. The provider will also examine the uterus and ovaries (if not removed) by placing two fingers in the vagina and pushing on the lower abdomen with their other hand. All of these are designed to identify abnormalities that may require further investigation. The practitioner may also want to discuss your sexual health, urinary issues such a stress incontinence or urinary urgency, length and frequency of menstrual periods, reproductive history, as well as any unusual symptoms such as breast tenderness, abdominal or pelvic pain, heavy or irregular vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge or itching.
Depending on your age and your needs, the visit may include discussion about possible birth control and family planning. For patients who have reached menopause or are currently experiencing menopause symptoms, the exam may include discussion of hormone treatment such as pellet therapy. All Epiphany providers will make appropriate recommendations for mammograms and colonoscopy. We will also address lifestyle, exercise, diet, vitamins, and sleep.
The Epiphany goal is to help and improve the overall health for the “whole woman”.
